Building Greener Logistics: ESG at Port Jersey Logistics

By

Continental Logistics

In September 2023, the Port of New York and New Jersey released its plan to get to net-zero greenhouse emissions by 2050, with interim goals of 35% reduction by 2025 and 50% by 2030.

The blueprint includes converting 50% of the light-duty fleet to electric vehicles by 2025.

All of it is another step in building a greener supply chain, which is critical in the role of environmental sustainability.

A recent study on the carbon footprint of food miles revealed global food miles equate to about 3 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (GtCO2e). It also showed that transport accounts for 19% of total food system emissions, and the transport of fruit and vegetables contributes to 36% of food miles emissions. Despite food miles making up about 18% of total freight miles, its emissions are responsible for 27% of the total freight emissions.

Rather than wait for government directives, Port Jersey Logistics has emerged as an industry and innovative leader in reducing the shipping industry’s carbon footprint while utilizing technology to increase shipping efficiency.

Port Jersey Logistics’ green initiatives that are already in place include harnessing solar energy, electrifying equipment to diminish fossil fuel reliance, implementing energy-efficient lighting, pursuing paperless operations, and extensive recycling and waste reduction efforts.

The Time is Now: Pressure is Building Behind the Green Supply Chain Movement

The World Economic Forum’s 21-page Emissions Report in Supply Chains looks at the challenges and realities of the industry’s green goals.

By increasing the visibility of supply chain emissions, and focusing more on Scope 3 emissions, companies can make better informed, conscious decisions that will contribute to decarbonizing the global economy.

There are three different types of emissions included in the report:

  • Scope 1: Direct greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Scope 2: Indirect emissions from purchased energy.
  • Scope 3: Emissions associated with upstream and downstream activities in a company’s value chain. This scope is broader than the other two. It includes information beyond the supply chain, such as emissions associated with employee commuting and investments. In the past, Scope 3 reporting has been voluntary, but the emissions report revealed that major developments are underway toward mandatory Scope 3 reporting.

Estimated Share of Scope 3 Emissions in Various Industries:

  • Agricultural: 90%.
  • Capital goods: 95%.
  • Chemicals: 75%.
  • Construction: 90%.
  • Food and beverage: 85%.
  • Oil and gas: 85%.
  • Transport EOMs: 95%.
  • Financial services: 100%.
